The market for electronic communication is open to anyone who wishes to enter and it is not necessary to obtain a license from the authorities. However, certain types of electronic communications providers have a duty to register their activities with Nkom. Registration is necessary for these providers to engage in legal activities. Registration must take place before or at the same time the activities commence.

Pursuant to Section 1-2 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, some electronic communications providers have a duty to register:

  • Providers that construct, operate and provide access to electronic communications networks that are used for the provision of public electronic communications services.
  • Providers of public telephone services.
  • Providers of transmission capacity (leased lines).

Providers that do not come under these categories do not have a duty to register.
