Operating license to extract mineral deposits and dimension stone

All enterprises planning the total extraction of mineral deposits of more than 10,000m3 of matter and any extraction of dimension stone must apply for an operating license from the Norwegian Directorate of Mining with the Commissioner of Mines at Svalbard (DMF). An operating license may only be granted to a party that has an extraction permit.

About this form

Enterprises requesting an operating license for extracting mineral deposits of more than 10,000m3 of matter or extraction of natural stone.

The documentation that must be enclosed with the application is stipulated in Section 1-8 of the Regulations to the Minerals Act.

The purpose of the license is to promote and ensure socially responsible administration and use of mineral resources in accordance with the principle of sustainable development.

Special requirements are set for approval as a responsible mining engineer for persons with professional qualifications from another EEA state.

Special rules apply for applications for operating licenses in Finnmark.

Remarks:

An operating license will lapse if operations are not commenced no later than five years after the license was issued. The same applies if operations have been suspended for more than one year.
